Such an amazing trip around Saigon !

That day was such an amazing day! Thank for Chaonha and Ms. Yên especially, we had an invaluable opportunity to learn too much interesting knowledge about history and culture of Saigon (HCMC) that we haven’t never heard before. We spent a whole day to go to HCMC Museum, visit ‘Lăng Ông ‘ (Mausoleum of Lord Marshal Lê Văn Duyệt), try to taste ‘vợt’ coffee in a very nice street, have lunch with Huế cuisine in an authentique restaurant and enjoy a Vietnamese tea ceremony. We would like to tell you our good experience here; we really hope you will like them :)

Our group has 6 people. We concentrated in Curry Shika Restaurant at 6am. It’s quite early because we afraid to not enough time with a thin schedule in one hand, in another hand we want to try experience different colors of Saigon’s living from morning to night. We breakfasted on ‘phở’ first. A ‘phở’ vendor stay at a small street (but nice and peaceful) that Saigonese usually call ‘hẻm’ (in Hanoi, they call it ‘ngõ’). Hẻm is a special thing of Saigon’s traffic.

Sometimes that is the shorter way to go to somewhere; sometimes we use them to quit a traffic jam. You can also find out many many food street vendors hide in that tiny world, cheaper and more delicious almost.
We had a long talk about Saigon in general. We realized that our city has a wide diversity of culture. It’s like a salad bow with mixture of Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese, French and American culture. You will be not able to understand thoroughly Saigon if don’t experience all of its heritages.

Lăng Ông located on Vũ Tùng Street (Bình Thạnh district). It was built from 19th century anh renovated in 1937. This temple worships Lord Marshal Lê Văn Duyệt (黎文悅), who served viceroy of Southern part under the first two Nguyễn Emperors. He was a eunuch but talented general who helped Lord Nguyễn Ánh – the future Emperor Gia Long (嘉隆) unify my country and establish the Nguyễn Dynasty. His governance greatly stabilized and helped develop the South of Vietnam, turning it into the utmost wealthy and peaceful region.

Before the Fall of Saigon, Lê Marshal was widely regarded by Southern gorverment and people as the greatest national hero, sometimes even as a Lucky God - a Kami (神); his image appeared on banknotes, the gate of his tomb was symbol of Saigon while prominent streets were named after him.

Even though everything has changed now (it’s so sad when I have to said that), his mausoleum still continues to earn its reputation by a unique classical architecture and the tragic story of Lê Marshal’s life.
